Placed on top of a hill dominating the Elsa Valley this lovely town is renowned for its numerous towers gathered in the historic centre and very dose to each other. Today there are only 14 of the original 72 towers. Although San Gimignano is of Etruscan origin, it started to develop only around the 12th century when the famous “Via Francigena” was built close by. Tuscany’s best white wine “Vernaccia di San Gimignano”, is available all over the town of towers. It was the first DOC wine in Italy and is today one of the few DOCG whites in the country. The Consortium of Vernaccia producers dates back at least to 1276.Then move to Volterra from it’s magnificent rocky promontory, the city surveys the sometimes wild, vast countryside surrounding it. It’s full of workshops where artisans craft the local alabaster into translucent souvenirs. From a windswept terrace road you can look over some of Tuscany’s best preserved Roman ruins.Last but not least discover the tiny village of Monteriggioni built by the Senese at the beginning of the 13th century as a defense outpost against the attacks of the Florentines. Our wonderful day exploring the Brunello wine region begins when you are picked up at the hotel and taken on a scenic drive through the beautiful Tuscan countryside comfortably seated in a luxury vehicle. Brunello was developed by Ferruccio Biondi Santi a little more than a century ago, and almost immediately drew the attention of connoisseurs for its excellence. Brunello is produced exclusively within the Montalcino territory, and only from Sangioveto Grosso grapes, a Sangiovese ìclone perfectly suited to local conditions. Before release, Brunello must be aged for four years, at least two of which must be in wooden casks. The first stop will be to a cutting-edge Brunello winery where we will taste an amazing Brunello wine and sample the spicy, intense extra virgin olive oil produced by the estate. We will visit the winery’s grounds and most importantly, the historic cellars. Next stop is the charming town of Montalcino, where we can enjoy lunch in a typical Tuscan restaurant and then have time to explore the town’s narrow winding streets filled with artisan food and wine shops. The unspoiled character of the town of Montalcino and the surrounding countryside is impressive, and nowadays rather rare. No visit would be complete without a look at Montalcino’s famous fortezza, the four- teenth-century fortress to which Sienese forces withdrew when Siena was definitively conquered and annexed by Florence in 1555. The view from the ramparts is spectacular. On the ground floor there is a well-stocked wine shop where it is possible to sample Brunello by the glass.
