Beautiful Sardinia

(8 days – 7 nights)

1 night in Baja Sardinia, 1 nights in Castelsardo, 2 nights in Alghero, 1 night in Bosa, 1 night in Cala Gonone and 1 night in Olbia

Day 1 – Olbia – Baja Sardinia

After arriving at Olbia airport and picking up your car rental,  head towards Costa Smeralda-Arzachena to Baja Sardinia. Overnight.

Day 2 – Baja Sardinia – Costa Smerlada – Castelsardo

Explore the famous Costa Smeralda, a playground for the international jet. These 20 kilometres of coastline is home of the most expensive hotels in the world and prestigious marinas for luxury yachts. Porto Cervo is the heart and the chicest resort on the island. Make a stop at the whitewashed church of Stella Maris on the way to the main marina, it is built in the same style and offers a wonderful view of the marina and coast. For those who love history, don’t miss the archaeological sites just outside the town of Arzachena. Here you can discover the Nuraghic era unique to Sardinia with a visit to the Tombe Gigante of Coddu Vecchju- the giant tomb and the Nuraghe Albucciu. Obviously, it is a must-see the amazing beaches, highly recommended are Liscia Riuja, Capriccioli, Pevero and the Spiaggia del Principe. From here, take the panoramic north-coastal road to Castelsardo or cut cross-country through Tempio Pausania and the Gallura area, if you don’t mind the windy roads. Overnight.

Day 3 – Castelsardo – Alghero

Drive up the historic centre of Castelsardo dominated by the Doria Castle. On a clear day, you can see across to the islands of Asinara and Corsica from the ramparts of the castle. The cobbled streets are lined with artisan shops and pleasant cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a cappuccino and watch the relaxed local lifestyle. Just a few kilometers on the outskirts of town is the remarkable Roccia dell’Elefante. A huge rock formation in the shape of an elephant. One of the most impressive and admired rocks on the island. From here head towards Alghero. The final destination is Alghero on the Coral Riviera. Known as “Barceloneta”, it is Sardinia’s Spanish jewel. The charming old town was walled and fortified by the Catalans and the Spanish, who occupied this corner of Sardinia for 400 years, and left a strong impression. Overnight.

Day 4 – Alghero

Enjoy the morning exploring the old historical centre with its beautiful cobbled streets and alleyways. Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria where you can climb the bell tower for a bird’s eye view of Alghero, or simply browse in the many artisan shops with the filigrana and coral jewelry and traditional handicrafts. In the afternoon relax on one of the beautiful beaches of the Coral Riviera or visit The Neptune’s Caves. In the evening “Typical dining experience with cooking demo” (included). Overnight.

Day 5 – Alghero – Bosa

Leaving Alghero take the coastal road to Bosa. This is one of the most panoramic routes on the island and often you can spot griffin vultures flying overhead whose colonies live in this area. Bosa is an old authentic fishing village dominated by the medieval Malaspina castle. The washed-out pretty, pastel colored houses cluster into the hillside and along the river Temo. The town produces a very strong white wine, Malvasia. You can taste this in any of the bars or opt for a professional tasting with cheese or chocolate. Overnight.

Day 6 – Bosa – Cala Gonone

Drive towards Macomer passing through the sleeping hamlets of Tresnuraghes and Cuglieri and continue through the countryside towards Nuoro. This area is called the Barbagia and is renowned for its traditions; an area that today still relies heavily on sheep farming and agriculture. From Nuoro head up into the hills to the rural villages of Mamoida and Orgosolo. Orgosolo is principally a pastoral village, inauspiciously known for timeless feuds among local family clans. Today the town is famous for the 150 murals, which decorate walls, houses and rocks throughout the town. Mamoiada on the other hand is famous for its carnival and Mamathones, the masks of which are on display in the museum. Continue the drive through Dorgali to the east coast and down to the pleasant seaside town of Cala Gonone. Overnight.

Day 7 – Cal Gonone – Olbia

This area is rich in adventurous activities such as trekking and canyoning but for those who prefer to relax it also has some of the best beaches on the island, such as Cala Luna and Cala Mariolu. Boat trips to these beaches leave from the port and some include a visit to the Bue Marino caves. Drive to Orosei and reach the unspoiled white bays of Oasis Bidderosa. Continue the drive towards Olbia. Overnight.

Day 8 – Olbia

Drive to the airport to return your rental car and depart on your flight.
