Pedal green hills beneath snowy summits and savor regional delights in the cradle of the ‘slow food’ movement. Glide past famous vineyards in Barolo and Barbaresco and taste the local wine, spicy ‘Bagna Cauda’, fine chocolate, aromatic cheese and salami and -of course- the king of all truffles, the renowned white truffle of Alba. Set off from the ‘hundred-tower’ city of Alba, with its splendid display of Roman, Baroque and Gothic architecture. Cycling meadows, vineyards and meandering valleys, you’ll reach imposing castles on your way into the slow food capital of Alta Langa, home to famous Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Cycle a lovely loop from Benevello and snap pictures of terrific views from the ridge of Mombarcaro, at elevation 900m, the highest village around. Take a narrow country lane through Bormida Valley passing fortified villages and castles and glide into the spa town of Acqui Terme where 80°C water bursts out of the fountain on the main square. Take time to wander round historic cities like Asti, with its labyrinth of cobbled lanes and ‘palazzi’ built in yellow stone. Stop to stretch your legs on a stroll beneath ancient arcades and cool off on inviting shady terraces. Your trip comes full circle as you ride back to the truffle capital: Alba.
