Individual tour – Minimum 2 people

Umbria is often called “the green heart of Italy” and rightfully so because it is one of the richest regions in the country, under all aspects: culture, food, breath-taking landscapes, vast forests. The historic path from Assisi to Spoleto takes you on the footsteps of St. Francis, the man that 800 years ago decided to embrace poverty, living in close contact with the animals and leading an errant life, trying to bring joy in other people’s lives.
You will be able to feel his presence as you wander through the magnificent countryside, walking through forests, fields, vineyards and olive groves, with always a medieval town on a hill in sight: the villages you visit on the way have maintained their own identity and it looks like the time has stood still. Last, but not least, this part of Italy is worldwide known for the endless variety of the local food, that will put your taste buds in heaven.

You will discover a perfectly preserved Roman temple in the middle of the city, and enjoy a unique view from the top of the Rocca. Finally, enjoy the sweetness of Rocciata: it’s a dessert similar to a strudel, which is said to have been brought to Assisi by the Longobards people. Overnight

Day 4 – Walk from Assisi to Spello

Your first day of walk will lead you from Assisi to Spello: you will ascend the Monte Subasio through a wonderful uphill path until reaching the “Eremo delle Carceri”, where you can gather in prayer in the caves where Francesco and his companions used to meditate. The itinerary continues trhrough an oak wood to the San Benedetto Abbey, built in the IXth century, today closed for restoration. You will later reach the medieval city of Spello through a downhill path: enjoy an evening walk through its stone made houses, whose balconies are typically decorated with flowers. Overnight

Challenge: 5 hours, 14.5 km, 808 m ascent, 980 m descent

Day 5 – From Spello to Vegnole

Before setting off you will be able to visit the medieval city of Spello: the two imposing towers defending Porta Venere are worthwhile a picture, but we suggest visiting the rich rooms of the Municipal Palace, and visit the Santa Maria Maggiore church to admire some Pinturicchio and Parmigianino frescoes. Today walk will lead you to the small village of Scanzano, through vineyards and olive groves. Overnight

Challenge: 4 hours, 10 km, 371 m ascent, 233 m descent

Day 6 –   From Uppello to Bovara di Trevi

A brief car transfer will take you to Uppello, where your walk starts. A steep climp will lead you to the Rocca of Scandolaro, once in defense of the surrounding territories. Day 7 – Walk from Bovara di Trevi to Poreta

From Bovara di Trevi you’ll follow the original “Francis Way”, the original path walked by the same Francis, until reaching Campello Alto, surrounded by wonderful views on the Spoleto valleys. Worthwhile of admiration are the convents of Pissignano and Campello, where you’ll be able to gather for a few minutes, enjoying the meditative atmosphere permeating these places, surrounded by olive trees.

Pass by the hamlet of Eggi and following the old dismantled railway line, you reach Spoleto, or you can make a detour for a longer but spectacular entry into the city, passing high above the Tessino stream on the medieval aqueduct that bridges the valley. Difficulty: 🔴 🔴 ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️

Trip Grade: The length of the walks varies from 9,5 to 18 km. Ascents can be up to 910m, on the first walk but this can be shortened with a taxi transfer.

Activity characteristics: This trip presents different landscapes. You will cross several hamlets and some larger villages where access roads have been asphalted. We have tried to avoid as much asphalt as possible. Some walks are on white roads (strada Bianca). The walks are for the greater part on well marked trails, old donkey paths and roads, and a walking stick can thereby be handy.
