Beyond the Screen: When the Places We Watch Become the Places We Want to Go

I have a confession. I am just as guilty as anyone of watching a movie or television series and immediately adding another destination to my travel wish list.

After watching Game of Thrones, I wanted to walk along Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls and explore the stone streets that brought King’s Landing to life. More recently, The White Lotus had me dreaming of Sicily. The stunning coastline, beautiful hotels, incredible food and unmistakable Italian atmosphere made me want to experience it all for myself.

And I know I am not alone.

From the Screen to the Suitcase

This is not a new travel trend. Movies, television and music have been inspiring travelers for generations. Beatles fans have been recreating the famous Abbey Road album cover for decades. Emily in Paris has viewers dreaming of Parisian cafés, Mamma Mia! makes the Greek islands irresistible, and Harry Potter continues to bring families to London. They search for the cafés, hotels, castles and neighborhoods connected to their favorite stories because visiting those places creates a personal connection to something they already love.

My daughter and I experienced this firsthand during a Harry Potter-themed trip to London. Seeing places connected to a story she loved brought a completely different level of excitement to our visit. It wasn’t simply about visiting filming locations. It was about sharing something meaningful, exploring together and creating memories that went far beyond the movies.

That is what makes screen-inspired travel so powerful. The emotional connection to a destination begins before the traveler ever arrives.

The Magic Doesn’t End When the Credits Roll

Of course, what looks effortless on screen doesn’t always translate into an effortless vacation.

A television show can transport viewers from one breathtaking location to another in seconds. In reality, those places might be hours apart. That picture-perfect beach could require a long hike, the charming restaurant might be booked months in advance, and the famous filming location might be packed with tourists.

And sometimes, the best experience isn’t the exact location seen on screen at all.

Someone inspired by The White Lotus may arrive in Sicily dreaming of luxurious seaside hotels, but leave talking about a small village, an unforgettable meal or a local experience they never knew existed.

A Game of Thrones fan may come to Dubrovnik for its famous filming locations, only to discover the beauty of the Adriatic, the region’s fascinating history and the charm of Croatia beyond the city walls.

The screen provides the inspiration. The destination has so much more to offer.

Beyond the Screen

This is where working with knowledgeable travel professionals makes all the difference.

At ItalyBeyond, our Europe-based team helps travel advisors turn those movie-inspired wish lists into customized European journeys. We know that recreating a scene is only one small part of a memorable vacation.

We help advisors find the right locations, recommend worthwhile experiences, coordinate transportation and select accommodations that fit their clients’ interests, travel style and budget.

Sometimes that means building an itinerary around favorite filming locations. Other times, it means using that initial inspiration as a starting point to introduce travelers to experiences they might never have discovered on their own.

After all, the most memorable travel moments aren’t always the ones we’ve already seen on screen.

They’re the unexpected discoveries, personal connections and experiences that become part of our own stories.

The next great travel story doesn’t have to follow a script.

Let ItalyBeyond help your clients discover the places they’ve dreamed of seeing—and everything waiting Beyond the Screen.
