A guided city tour to discover the elegant city centre of Parma walking through the main streets from the Pilotta Palace (only external), the Regio Theatre until Piazza Garibaldi. Visit of the Cathedral, one of the most important example of Romanesque architecture, which houses the Deposition (1178), a sculptural masterpiece by Benedetto Antelami, and the great void of the dome frescoed by Correggio in 1526 with the Assumption of the Virgin, a great example of Mannerist painting. Following guided visit of the Baptistery, built by Antelami in pink marble of Verona with octagonal plan, one of the most important example in Italy of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic art.
Another example of Renaissance in Parma is the Church of Saint Mary of Steccata which houses the last work of Parmigianino, painted between 1530 and 1539 with great accuracy of detail. It depicts the parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins with a profusion of animal and plant motifs set against a red background. On the intrados, with gold decorations on a blue background, are four monochrome figures: Eve and Aaron on the right and Adam and Moses on the left.
Lunch on your own.
After lunch, time to discover the best historical shops of the city centre: a perfumer where you can know the story about the symbol flower of the city: the Violetta of Parma.
(If you are interested in perfumery we can arrange an โ€œolfactive tastingโ€ with a passionate perfumer (on request and on availability).
A very interesting quarter in the hearth of the city is the antiques shops for original objects, restoring laboratories, wood craftsmen, decoration, a real district of old works and traditions.
Last but not least typical food shops where you can taste and buy the best product of the local food and wine excellence.
